The more popular old town in Lijiang is Dayan Town. It is one of the few places in China with beautiful old style traditional buildings. Most of these buildings were re-built after the 1996 earthquake. There are no cars, trucks, moterbikes in this century old cobbled street and ancient houses town.

Lookout for the Naxi woman who wears blue blouses and trousers with blue or black aprons. They have a T-shaped traditional cape over their back. The light and dark halves of the cape symbolises day and night. Seven embroidered circles represent stars. On each shoulder is a large circle to depict the eyes of a frog, an important God to the Naxi until the 15th Century.

At the central square of the Old Town, you see the Naxi women hands-in-hands dancing to the tune.  On each of their 80-90 years old faces are a thousand stories. They dance in the day, they dance in the night.

The Naxi written language is created over a 1,000 years ago using pictographs or Naxi hieroglyphics. The most famous is the Dongba written language.
